ABC HISTORY - THE RELATION BETWEEN STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
Structural abnormalities of the spine have a much larger impact on ones health beyond what most people relate to as just causing neck or back pain. In fact, most spinal problems go undetected for years because it has to progress enough to cause swelling, which triggers the nerves for pain. This is why anti-inflammatories help to relieve the pain, but the underlying problem has not been addressed. Much like taking an anti-inflammatory for a toothache, without fixing the cavity. It is with the Advanced Biostructural Correction (ABC) technique that we can correct the underlying problem.
STRUCTURE
Vertebral joints are prone to mechanical insults and trauma, which cause them to misalign (subluxate). Vertebra can subluxate in several directions, however the primary direction that causes the BIGGEST mechanical challenge for the body are vertebra that are pushed forward. If a vertebra has been pushed forward then everything on top of that bone has been pushed forward. The body has no way of retrieving this forward bone, and as time progresses, the joint loses range of motion, inflammation occurs, and joints above and below that segment are forced to take a load that is not natural to the joint complex. Overtime as insults and injuries add up numerous problems will occur, including poor posture, pain, muscle spasm, decreased range of motion, and if left alone degeneration. Unlike regular chiropractic, which addresses the symptoms, it is with the Advanced Biostructural Correction (ABC) technique that we address the vertebras that have been forced forward, addressing the source of the problem.
FUNCTION
If a vertebra is displaced forward by trauma, or microtrauma (mechanical stress, chemical stress, emotional stress) a disruptive shift affects the normal curves of the neck, midback, and lowback. In this situation, the body is forced to compensate for the lack of proper structure by bending and twisting to keep the head and body vertical with the eyes horizontal. The bending and twisting also causes a tethering (pulling) effect on the spinal cord. When the cord is under mechanical tension it triggers the same neurologic stress response as if being chased by a lion. The stress response starts a cascade of events, beginning with the secretion of stress hormones. The hormones act to accelerate cardiovascular output, inhibit both the digestive and immune systems, and have a negative impact on both the brain function and sleep pattern, which is appropriate if you were really being chased by a lion, but is not appropriate for normal daily life. This heightened state of the nervous system ultimately accelerates the aging process, which is in direct contrast to the preferred state of growth and healing, which acts to maintain and improve function of the body. The problem is the body can only operate in one state at a time. So if your body is operating in a survival mode, it is not able to properly maintain itself in a state of growth and repair.
CORRELATING STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
The combination of stress and changes in the normal curves force ligaments, muscles, vertebral discs, and bones to load more then they are naturally capable to handle. It is similar to holding a bowling ball close to your body with your arm bent versus holding the ball away from your body with your arm out straight. The weight line created with a bent elbow with the ball over the shoulder establishes a better leverage for the body to handle the load. With an outstretched arm, you are losing the stability with which the body can handle the weight. If your neck and midback curves are out of alignment, the load of the upper body falls to the lowback and pelvis. If the lowback muscles are working overtime, a failure due to fatigue can occur. By adjusting the vertebra that has been forced forward, we are allowing the body to naturally unwind and reestablish the proper curves needed to handle the load. This relaxes the overstressed muscles, ligaments, discs, and bone. This also returns slack to the spinal cord, which takes the nervous system out of the heightened state and into the preferred state of growth and healing. By using the ABC technique we are allowing the body to return to its proper alignment. This allows the nervous system to operate at the most optimal level of growth and repair, which increases the vitality of the whole system, leading to a healthier, stronger, and more stable individual.
