When you first visit Action Chiropractic you will begin with a consult. The consult will consist of a history of the patient, including a complete question and answer session in relation to the chief complaint and any related past events or symptoms.
After the consult, the doctor will gather data from specific diagnostic tests to determine if your condition can be helped through chiropractic care. The first diagnostic test is a complete neurological scan. This is a noninvasive scan used to determine the level of stress on your nervous system and how efficiently your nervous system is functioning. It is also used to detect areas of nerve disturbance as a result of structural misalignments of the spinal column.
Most patients use pain as their main gauge for their health status, however, nerves for pain comprise only 10% of your nervous system. The neurological scan evaluates the other 90%, which is made up of your autonomic nervous system (the same system that controls your organs, glands, and immune function) and motor nerves, which control your muscles. Similar to an electrician checking the circuits of your house, the scan checks the circuits of your body. If you think of your spine as your bodies fuse box, a vertebral bone out of its normal alignment is like a blown fuse in your house and whatever that circuit controls cannot funon properly. An example would be having a vertebra out of alignment at the level that innervates the stomach, causing your stomach to release too much acid resulting in indigestion. Although the person may not have back pain, the system is still in crisis. It has been proven that a very slight amount of pressure (as little as the weight of a dime) can disturb the nerves function up to 60% with or without symptoms.
Based on the result of the neurological scan the doctor may recommend x-rays to evaluate the structural integrity of the spine. The x-rays will also reveal how long any structural misalignment has existed based on the degree of spinal decay (wear and tear), much like a dentist using x-rays to evaluate dental decay. After reviewing the x-rays, the doctor can then compare the x-rays, as it relates to the spinal structure, to the results of the neurological scan. The combined results of the x-ray and diagnostic scan are used to create a complete diagnostic package associating structure with function. The results are reviewed with the patient, and the doctor will then give the appropriate options for care. This allows the patient to make an informed decision on what type of care is best for them, and from there the treatment will begin.
